The test in the mail

Since 2017 you've been able to order a kit, mail a sample of your stool to a lab, and get back a list of foods your gut supposedly wants and a list it supposedly doesn't. The science underneath is real and the letters of the last week have told it: the Human Microbiome Project mapped the trillions of organisms in the gut, and the methods it used, sequencing the genes of everything living there, are what the consumer kits borrow. What the kits add is the promise that your personal list can be read from one sample.

I'd like to tell you plainly where that stands. The microbiome changes day to day with what you ate, how you slept and whether you were sick; a single sample is a photograph of a river. Two kits from the same person on the same day have returned different lists. And the gastroenterology societies that review this evidence have said, as recently as 2024, that commercial microbiome tests shouldn't be used to make clinical decisions, because there isn't yet a validated way to turn the sequencing into advice for one person. That may change. The field is moving fast and some of the companies are doing serious work. But today the honest reading is: the science is strong and the mail-order version isn't ready.

It sits in the Healing month anyway, because Healing is the month for the hidden numbers, and this is a lesson about which hidden numbers to trust. The gut keys that are proven are the plain ones you've already been handed: thirty plant foods a week, fermented food daily, fiber near thirty grams, and a log of how you feel after you eat. Those move the microbiome measurably, in trials, in weeks. If you have real symptoms, bloating, pain, change in your bowels, the door is a gastroenterologist, not a kit; there are validated tests for the things that matter, and a physician knows which.

Vault Human coaches and doesn't treat, and it won't sell you a test. It will ask you to read the one instrument you own.

A coach. Every day. For the whole of you.
