Three conditions
Carl Rogers was an American psychologist who in the 1940s turned therapy on its head. The analyst had been the expert, interpreting the patient. Rogers said the client was the expert on their own life, and that the therapist's job was not to interpret or advise but to provide three conditions, and that if the conditions were present, growth would happen on its own, the way a plant grows if it has light and water.
The three. Empathy: understanding the person's world from inside, and showing that you do. Congruence: being real, genuine, the same person inside and out, with no professional mask. And unconditional positive regard: accepting the person fully, without judgment, whatever they bring. He called his approach person-centered, and the research since has found that those three conditions, wherever they appear, in therapy, teaching, parenting, management, predict growth better than almost any technique.
It's a Healing key because it names what heals. Not the method. The relationship. Nearly every therapy on this shelf works better when Rogers's three conditions are present and worse when they're absent, and the studies on what makes therapy work keep landing on the quality of the bond more than the brand of the treatment.
It's also the clearest description I know of what a coach is for, and of what Vault Human tries to be. Not an expert with answers. A person who understands you from inside, who's real with you, and who's on your side without conditions. Rogers believed that in that kind of presence, people find their own way. Eighty years of evidence agrees.
A coach. Every day. For the whole of you.
